In an age of instant digital images, it is easy to forget that photography and printmaking share a rich and intertwined history.

Before the refinement of silver‑based photography in the nineteenth century, artists developed photogravure to permanently preserve optical images, merging light‑sensitive processes with traditional intaglio etching. This innovation laid the groundwork for today’s photopolymer techniques.

In this workshop, artist Cheung Tsz-ki will guide participants in creating photogravure and photogram works using photopolymer plates. Across four sessions, you will learn the fundamentals of intaglio printing and explore how light‑sensitive materials can be used to translate image into print.

From darkroom experiments to contemporary practice, discover how light becomes image and print. Join us and experience printing with light.

 ⤵ About the Instructor

Cheung Tsz-ki graduated from the Department of Fine Arts at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2018, and MA Multi-disciplinary Printmaking, UWE Bristol in 2023. Through art making he practices seeing; passively observing the negated subject - glances once settled on clouds far away, tides long gone. These remnants are printed as a language on paper, fragments of descriptions which represent the embodiment of the fixed gaze. His prints can be considered as a momentary pause, a resting place for exhausted eyes. He has participated in exhibitions including: Royal West of England Academy Annual Exhibition (Bristol, 2023), 20/20 Hong Kong Print Art exhibition (Hong Kong Heritage Museum, 2021), The Sea Keeps Burning (PMQ, 2020) and Hong Kong Fine Print (HART Hall, 2019).
